Lab 19: sky: star spectra-red shift

Migration

  • Using the spectroscope, look at the hydrogen spectra, looking for the 4 lines.
  • Look these up and see how they fit into the Balmer series.
  • Look up the doppler effect, which is usually associated with sound, like hearing a siren coming towards or away from you (shorter or longer waves)
  • The distance to stars can be calculated by their red shift, moving the hydrogen spectra to the red side (longer waves)
  • Look up a few stars with their red shifts, and explain why theirs is higher than others, in progressother forwords, WHY are the farthest stars more red shifted?
  • How is this measured at Keck?
