Lab 35a: resources: Hawai'i island disasters and impact
Migration
- Our island is dependent on air and barge shipments for everything from Amazon packages to the rice we eat and the fuel oil that makes our electricity and pumps our water.
- We face several disaster threats:
- Hurricane: periodic, seasonal, path is known days or weeks in
progressadvanceĀ - Tsunami: sudden, but we know the usual directions for these, and we have some warning in some cases
- Earthquake: no warning on our island, can disrupt power and water supplies for days or weeks
- Wildfire: little warning, but we know the vulnerable areas and weather conditions, can cause power and water outages (why are these usually linked?)
- Flooding: some warning from weather sources, can disrupt roads, power, water supplies and ability to deliver supplies
- Hurricane: periodic, seasonal, path is known days or weeks in
- On your wall map, make a simulation of each of these, with historical references to each, and how they impacted our life on this island
- Include a legend for each disaster at the bottom
- How is HPA impacted by each?
- If you live on island, how will your home be impacted?
