Brain waves at the elab
Started in 2010 as a project by Seniors Mariko Thorbecke and Duncan Michael, we are now many generations of brain wave headsets beyond the first units, with three new brain wave headsets enabling students to measure concentration, brain activity and even localization, such as "close your eyes" or "think of another language".
We have several levels of brain wave headsets at the energy lab from the Emotiv Insight to the EPOC to the lab grade FLEX unit, seen in studies and films that looks like a swim cap for dream and epilepsy research.
Over the years these headsets have been used for everything from concentration studies (does noise impact studying?) to textbook evaluations (pdf, text or iPad book?) to impact of sleep an caffeine on the ability to sleep and even one project where Duncan flew a drone over an audience of hundreds of people at the global MacWorld conference with his mind!
Island science students Andre Amaral and Pedro Pipponzi are leading research this year with the Insight units, and hope to move on to more advanced project soon.
