meshtasticd: running meshtastic on a Pi

meshtasticd installation:

  • Pi lite 64 bit
  • pi/raspberry-> pi/<your password here>
  • raspi-config enable ssh, spi, i2c, wifi
  • alt login: admin/<yourpassword>


Units: 

  • cat /proc/cpuinfo
  • free -h
  • sudo apt install hardinfo -y
  • sudo nmap -sn 192.168.1.0/24. (assumes your network is 192.168.1.x)

sudo nano /boot/firmware/config.txt

  • dtparam=i2c_arm=on
  • dtparam=i2s=on
  • dtparam=spi=on
  • dtoverlay=spi0-0cs
  • #enable_uart=1
  • # Run in 64-bit mode
  • arm_64bit=1

for pi zero:

add this line to /boot/firmware/cmdline.txt

module-load=dwc2,g_ether

look for /dev/spidev-0

# First, locate your radio hardware

ls /etc/meshtasticd/available.d

# Ex: display-waveshare-2.8.yaml  lora-MeshAdv-900M30S.yaml  lora-meshstick-1262.yaml


# Then, copy desired config to `config.d`

# Examples:

sudo cp /etc/meshtasticd/available.d/lora-MeshAdv-900M30S.yaml /etc/meshtasticd/config.d/

sudo cp /etc/meshtasticd/available.d/lora-waveshare-sxxx.yaml /etc/meshtasticd/config.d

sudo cp /etc/meshtasticd/available.d/lora-MeshAdv-Mini-900M22S.yaml /etc/meshtasticd/config.d/


  • sudo nano /etc/meshtasticd/config.yaml
  • enable web server (yaml is space sensitive)
  •  cd /etc/meshtasticd/config.d 

port 9443 change to  443

  • sudo systemctl enable meshtasticd
  • sudo systemctl start meshtasticd
  • sudo systemctl status meshtasticd

  • sudo systemctl stop meshtasticd
  • sudo reboot

  • journalctl -u meshtasticd -b
  • sudo systemctl enable meshtasticd —now
  • journalctl -u meshtasticd -f
  • journalctl -xeu meshtasticd.service


Progress live:

journalctl -xeu meshtasticd.service -f

Install meshtastic CLI:

  • sudo apt install pipx -y
  • pipx install meshtastic
  • pipx ensurepath

Meshtasticd live output:

  • journalctl -xeu meshtasticd.service -f
  • journalctl -u meshtasticd.service --since "10 minutes ago" -f
  • journalctl -u meshtasticd.service -f -o json-

Linux install:

Debian 12 (bookworm)

  • echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network:/Meshtastic:/beta/Debian_12/ /' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/network:Meshtastic:beta.list
  • curl -fsSL https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network:Meshtastic:beta/Debian_12/Release.key | gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/network_Meshtastic_beta.gpg > /dev/null
  • sudo apt update
  • sudo apt install meshtasticd
  • apt install hardinfo -y
  • su root
  • cp /etc/meshtasticd/available.d/lora-MeshAdv-900M30S.yaml /etc/meshtasticd/config.d/
  •  nano /etc/meshtasticd/config.yaml
  • systemctl enable meshtasticd
