1.3 Homework:

  1. We’ll be studying population growth in detail soon, but solve this riddle: you are given 2 M&M candies, and told that you can double it every minute, starting at the beginning of class. How many would you have after 15 minutes? You can do this with math or just double-double-double…
  2. The rule of 70 says that if you know the percentage growth rate of anything (country, bacteria, Taylor Swift fans) you can calculate how many years it will take to double the population: 70/% = years to double. If the growth rate in Doofania (Doofensmirtz is president) is 10% how many years will it take for the population to double? 5%? 20%?
  3. Indoor air pollution is a huge issue worldwide, but impacts poor women in LDC countries particularly, explain why.
  4. Explain how subsidies to oil companies might impact the environment.
  5. Look up “externalized cost” and explain how this is relevant to pollution and question 4.
  6. A company says “we are responsible only to our shareholders”. How is this different from the stewardship worldview?
  7. Explain the difference between Muir and Teddy Roosevelt’s approaches to resources
  8. How was Aldo Leopold different from them?
  9. Look up Rachel Carson and list three things about her that stand out to you.
  10. When was the EPA started, and what three events were going on in the US then that inspired it?
